The second installment of “Sampled to the Soul” continues to explore the practice of taking parts of older songs to create new works of art. While primarily known for its use in dance and hip-hop music, sampling draws from a wide array of different genres, as this eclectic playlist exhibits. Mounting legal and financial barriers threatens the proliferation of sampling, with some critics even dismissing the practice as plagiarism. Despite these challenges, a new generation of artists like Caribou, Kaytranada and Dirty Beaches have helped the art form continue to flourish. The first episode in this series can be heard here.
