APEX
03.20.22

APEX (Asia Pacific Exports) focuses on delivering music from the deepest corners of the globe; the Asia Pacific. Run by Chinese-New Zealander DJ, Jess Fu, APEX welcomes guest DJs from across the Asia Pacific and it’s diaspora. The show dives into all genres from all centuries; from disco to indie rock, to electronic to traditional, indigenous music.
A hint of sweet with a dash of spice, spell-bounding smooth selector/producer Maggie Tra uses the world as her playground. The Australian born Vietnamese/Cambodian sets bring finesse and flair to the dance-floor by embracing the culture of the land she’s in with wholeness and conviction. Maggie musically exposes herself within her sets in varying perspectives, whether she’s spinning Hip Hop, Soul and R&B tunes to House, Disco & Funk. The DJ graced the decks in India, Brussels, Berlin, London, Australia and Vietnam.
Establishing herself from humble beginnings, Maggie first rose to prominence behind the scenes. Grounded, she founded SYS Sister Sounds a label and collective that supports women & non-binary people in the music industry. The organisation runs ’Pho The Girls’ DJ Workshops, which focuses on helping Asian women and non-binary people to get into the industry. More recently she founded Hà Nội Community Radio a project aimed to unite creatives in Hanoi, Vietnam
Stepping into the limelight with production, Maggie made her incredible debut as a producer with the release of a single ‘Pretty Srey’ and ‘SOY’. The emerging producer uses sounds from her Asian heritage to explore her roots. Her debut EP ‘U.L.A’ (U Look Asian) was supported on Triple J, Bandcamp, NTS, Mixmag Asia & Worldwide FM. A weaver of musical fibres, her creations entwine melody, genres and tempos to create her own tapestries coupled with Asian influences. She has also released music with labels Shika Shika Collective & FuFu Records.
Celebrating her unique, equivocal style, Maggie masterfully balances individuality and embraces the cultures she’s in. Allowing her to bridge the gap between Australia and Asia assisted by carefully curated DJ sets and production with a focus on highlighting Asian music and bringing it to the masses.
