Jimmy Tamborello - Dying Songs

Richard Fearless presents Metal Box, broadcast from his shipping container studio situated on the peninsula of land between the River Thames and the River Lea in London’s East End. Fearless’ career as a DJ, founder of cult band Death in Vegas, and head of the independent label Drone have cemented Fearless’ reputation as a diverse maker and renowned digger. Expect a deep love of underground electronic music, with Fearless in the mix and the odd guest stopping by.

On this month’s Metal Box, I’m honoured to have a mix from Chicago legend, Hieroglyphic Being, recorded at Smart Bar, Chicago.

“A few years ago I was in Chicago supporting Nine Inch Nails while in town I made a pilgrimage to one of the jewels of the city, Gramaphone Records. I was flicking through the racks when one of the staff asked if I wanted to listen to anything, after a few requests I asked if he could recommend any local artists. He pulled out a pile of wax, most of which was absolute killer. I left the shop having spent all my wages on a nice hefty stack of vinyl. When I was going through the records later on closer inspection I noticed the same names kept comes up Jamal Moss, Hieroglyphic Being, Members Only, the Mathematics label. I knew the artists and labels but not that they were all part of the same brain. I’ve always been drawn to overdriven lo-fi acid but these tracks had an and abstract freeform, visceral energy which I found incredibly inspiring, it felt like a moment in time had been caught and then moved on but forever held in wax. It’s with great pleasure that I’d like to announce a guest mix from the Hieroglyphic Being, recorded at Smart Bar, Chicago. Massive thanks and respect to Jamal Moss.”
