Underground Institute Picks - Felicia Atkinson: William Bronk

03.09.23

We pick the artist – They pick the music.

UI Picks is curated by the Underground Institute, an international agency for adventurous music and platform for culture. UI Picks episodes are tailored for selected underground radio stations.

This episode is curated by sound artist and composer Félicia Atkinson of Shelter Press, who draws inspiration from images, as much as sound. Felicia dedicates the episode to William Bronk, who despite not being around anymore, is aliving and well in recording form, and his voice emerges between the musical pieces.

She writes: “I discovered the writings of William Bronk while reading Ben Lerner’s books. This mix includes, among other sources, the voices and music of different artists, musicians, poets, such as William Bronk, Marguerite Duras, John Cage, Alice Notley, Helen Frankenthaler, Jeanne Moreau, Agnes Martin, Tara Jane O’Neil, Marisa Anderson, Paul Bley, Charles Mingus, Smog, Robert Ashley. There are some of my own recordings as well, archival and present.

Here is a poem by William Bronk
Winter Vocative (1987, A new Directions)

Broken sky-mirror,
blue-shadowed snow,
June is far now,

hold while you can; show
bare of branch
stark of stalk:

ache us to know”
